The Aegean Regatta started in 2001 as an international sailing competitions as a way of promoting tourism to the outlying remote Eastern Greek islands along the Turkish coast- often overlooked in Athen's publicity budgets.
The regatta provided ‘showcase races’ for the islanders and’ pursuit races,’ to islands as new destinations for the competitors to visit (covering 107 miles, normally three islands per year to the islands of Lesvos, Chios, Oinousses, Samos, Leros, Ikaria, Kos, Symi, Rhodes, Lemnos, Samothrace, Andros, Lipsi, Patmos, Astypalea, Tilos, Skopelos, Amorgos , Kalymnos, Nisyros, Thassos .
Greece joining the EU provided the funds to invite international journalist’s to promote it ‘internationally .
More likely to succeed (to us), was by promoting the islands as motor -boat destinations, rather than a ‘yacht race of note’, due to the level of racing compared with international regattas such as in western Europe, USA and the Solent. England.
Covering both the racing events, as well as the destinations on each island, on the race off -day , guaranteed maximum exposure
