Great Ocean Drives  - Kalalamta to Monemvasia via the Mani Peninsular on the Peloponnese was to be the highlight of the road trip what was to be a total of 4,000 miles .

To the ancients, Cape Matapan was the portal to the underworld and driving the on the Mani Peninsular still feels like a journey to the end of the earth .

The drive proper start in the demure resort of Kardamili ,  then on the corniche  road to  Areopoli – probably the most sensational 25 miles of sea side driving in Greece following a coast scalloped with coves and dotted with tower – houses built by feudal medieval warlords.

Head to Cape Matapan topped by its pepper –pot lighthouse, then snake up the Mani’s eastern seaboard, seeking out tumbled Turkish citadels and barrel -roofed Byzantine churches. Eventually, you’re in Gythion, a pretty fishing port, which has a causeway to the fortified island of Monemvasia. This is Greece’s Mont Saint .-Michel and is completely unmissable.
